About The Foundation Phase
The Foundation Phase was introduced to Pembroke Dock Community School in September 2007, a year earlier than all other schools. The Foundation Phase combines Early Years education (for 3-5 Years old) and Key Stage 1 (5-7 years old). The aim is to bring consistency and continuity to the education of your children at this all important period of their development.

The Foundation Phase is about enhancing the learning experiences which enable children to have fun whilst learning. It is also about encouraging children to be creative and imaginative. Emphasis is placed on developing the children's communication skills and understanding, their personal, social and physical well-being, as well as encouraging a positive attitude to learning and building self-esteem and self-confidence. The biggest change is the importance given to the outdoor curriculum, where children will take part in outdoor activities and learn about conservation and sustainability. This emphasis on using the outdoor environment as a resource for children's learning will help to ensure that children learn in an exciting, stimulating and safe environment.

As well as visiting a wide range of off-site venues, children at Pembroke Dock Community School are very fortunate to have their own Forest School, a specially designed woodland area on the outskirts of Pembroke. Trained staff lead regular visits to the site, which excite and challenge the children in the Foundation Phase.
There are seven Areas of Learning in the Foundation Phase:
When your children enter the Foundation Phase, assessments will be made to ensure that your children’s first experience of education are appropriate to their stage of development. Subsequent activities planned for them will help to develop progress in their learning.
