Our school has been involved in the Physical Education for School Sport (PESS) project since January, 2003, when the Welsh Assembly Government, introduced extra funding for Physical Education, to promote 2 hours of quality exercise and sport for all pupils in Wales. Mrs A. Mear, Curriculum manager at PDCS for Science, Design and Technology, ICT and Physical Education, is also currently the PESS Development Centre Manager for Pembroke Family of Schools and a trained tutor and mentor for the PESS gymnastic modules and Health, Fitness and Well Being (HFWB).

The PESS Gymnastic Modules are one of the (PESS) initiatives that train teachers to be more confident to deliver gymnastics and hence improve the standards of teaching and learning. This approach to teaching gymnastics has been developed to make gymnastics more accessible, simple and progressive. It develops pupils’ use of key vocabulary, body tension and core strength in a progressive manner building on previous skills allowing pupils to evaluate their own and others performance.
Using the modules 1 and 2, all lessons follow the same structure using a RECIPE format.

Pupil Assessment Profiles is a Peer and Self Assessment Tool that we are developing, for all pupils throughout the school, using ICT for pupils to record their gymnastic performances. The project was started in Summer Term 2006 as part of a General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) Network Grant application. These film clips are then inserted into the profile which allows the pupils to evaluate their own and others performances and determine how to improve their performance in future lessons.
