Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship

Pembroke Dock Community School is developing lifestyles suitable for the 21st century. Our desire is 'sustainability' - achievable by thinking globally while acting locally and fully integrated into our school life.
'To live sustainably and to be globally aware of the impact of our own lifestyles is, therefore, not an option but a necessity.'
We are very proud that we have achieved our Gold Sustainable Schools Award in 2005.
At Pembroke Dock Community School, Healthy Schools, Eco Schools and Sustainable Schools are all interlinked and we develop the three together as they contain many common areas - biodiversity, waste minimisation, energy, water, transport, health, global citizenship, community citizenship.
Global Connections have supported our work and have improved our awareness of Fair Trade issues. During Fairtrade Fortnight in March last year, year 5 attended an event where they listened to a cotton producer from India talk about the difficult lives farmers and their families lead in order to survive. Pupils collaboratively made a colourful wall hanging about why we should support the use of Fairtrade cotton. This is displayed in our corridor.
Our school continues to follow the progress of our sponsored child Venancia, who lives in Guatemala. Her village now has fresh water, rather than water being transported there in tanks. Her home now has an outside toilet. She still lives in a one-roomed hut with her parents and 5 brothers and sisters. We now sponsor another child called Clara, from Brazil.
Pupils are encouraged to understand the importance of sustainability, develop an informed concern about the quality of their environment and to recognise they are global citizens. We are very proud of our achievements, but we all realise this is only the beginning; this work will be with us for the rest of our lives.
